(NAPSI)-Planning a road trip in the near future? You need to remember the map, camera, pretzels and beverages for the drive. Don't forget to take a quick check under the hood and throughout the car before you leave. A few minutes could save you time and money, not to mention provide you peace of mind-knowing your car can get you and your family to your destination safely.
An estimated 180 million travelers will be taking to the road in the coming months, and proper car maintenance has become more important than ever before. Prior to embarking on a road trip, here are some steps motorists can take to help ensure their safety.
Tire pressure-Be sure your tires are within the recommended range of air pressure according to your car owner's manual. This is essential for control, gas mileage and overall safety.
Brakes-Have your brakes checked regularly, especially before leaving on a road trip. Old or worn-out brake pads can cause serious problems if they're ignored or go unnoticed.
Wiper blades-Good blades are essential for proper vision on the road. Test them before leaving home.
Engine check-Checking your engine can be easier than you might think. Try following a three-step program called "All 3 Every 3." It's recommended by NASCAR legend Richard Petty and his crew chiefs. The program suggests people perform the following steps every three thousand miles: 1. Change the oil. 2. Clean the fuel injectors. 3. Check belts, hoses and fluids.
"People have gotten away from performing regular maintenance on their cars," said Petty. "The 'All 3 Every 3' program will get people back involved in taking care of their cars and protecting their investment. As an example, many people don't realize that in the same 3,000 miles your oil gets dirty, so do your fuel injectors. Cleaning your fuel injectors on a regular basis will help keep your fuel intake system operating more efficiently. So remember that giving your car a thorough examination before heading out can help you and your family arrive at your final destination safely."
Petty is working with the Car Care Council to get his message across. The group has promoted travel safety through auto maintenance for over 30 years. A little auto maintenance can go a long way toward saving motorists money.
