(NUI) - Your bags are packed but are you really ready to go?
Americans are beginning to travel again, according to The Air Transportation Association. But, while most consumers can find great deals on air and hotel rates, few know how to evaluate whether they need travel insurance, according to the experts at Insurance.com (www.insurance .com).
"Whether it's a trip across the country or around the world, people need to be aware of the issues and possible situations unique to travel that can arise," said Steven Paul, vice president of the online insurance resource. "Travelers should review their existing insurance policies, both personal and through work, to determine whether or not they need to supplement that coverage for further trip protection."
Travel insurance can protect vacationers and business travelers with services including international medical insurance, travel protection, the cost of emergency evacuation home from an overseas location and assistance services with 24-hour worldwide medical coverage.
To help you plan for your next trip, Insurance.com offers these tips:
* Review your existing coverage first. A common concern for travelers is losing their luggage. Some homeowners' policies cover lost luggage but others do not. Find out whether you will be reimbursed for any bags - and their contents - that could be lost or damaged on your trip. If traveling internationally, you should examine whether your health insurance will cover any necessary medical treatment while overseas.
* Prepare for Murphy's Law. If you have saved for a special getaway, could you afford to lose that money? If not, you may want to consider buying trip cancellation or interruption insurance. Then, if you prepaid for a cruise, for example, and the operator suddenly went out of business or you had to cancel the trip, the cost of the cruise could be protected. If bad weather cut your vacation short, interruption insurance would cover some cruise-related expenses, such as catching an immediate flight home or hotel expenses en route. Additionally, some policies reimburse any unused prepaid expenses such as greens fees or boat rentals. Consider any deductibles or coverage limitations to be sure the policy fits your individual situation.
* Follow a checklist for carefree travel. Before heading to your destination, consider the following three questions: Do any of my existing insurance policies offer travel-related coverage? What potential risks do I want to try to protect myself from while traveling? Is there a supplemental travel insurance policy that may be right for my situation?
Choosing the right supplemental travel insurance policy can be a daunting task because there are so many different types of travel insurance available. Insurance.com can help you assess your travel insurance needs with comprehensive educational content, free quotes and tools to help find the policy that is right for you.
